ANNUAL MEETING
Well, the countdown is on for the last APHA Annual Meeting of the century in
Chicago. The ICEHS conference hotel is the Sheraton Chicago at 301 E. North Water Street
(call 1-800-424-5248 for reservations). Meeting participants will become accustomed to
traveling on the APHA shuttles because most of our sessions will be held at the McCormick
Place Lakeside Center, site of the exhibits (including our own ICEHS booth), the poster
sessions, and conference registration. Evening sessions and possibly some daytime sessions
will be held at the Sheraton Chicago (Hotel 9 on map).
Several highlights of this year's Annual Meeting include:
1) The presentation of the APHA Award for Excellence to Susan Baker, Professor, Johns
Hopkins University School of Public Health at the Opening Session on Monday, November 8.
The Award for Excellence is given each year to a living individual in recognition of his
or her exceptionally meritorious contributions to the improvements of the health of the
people. APHA will formally announce this year's award recipients in the September issue of
The Nation's Health.
2) Our own ICEHS Awards Dinner is on Wednesday, November 10. Janet Holden is handling the
arrangements for what promises to be another memorable ICEHS event.
3) A continuing education institute organized by the Violence Committee, "Advancing
Local Policy in Violence Prevention" on Saturday, November 6 from 1 - 5 pm. See the
preliminary program for a detailed description (CEI #6).
4) An ICEHS Social Hour on Monday, November 8 at 6:30 PM, followed by a special evening
session, "Progress in Injury Control: Opportunities for the Future".
For those of you that have reviewed the preliminary program for the Annual Meeting,
please note that there were a couple of errors that will be corrected in the final
program: 1) The verbal latebreakers session will be held on Tuesday, November 9 at 8:30
AM; 2) Session 2047.1 will be held on Wednesday, November 10 at 8:30 AM; and 3) Session

The Award for Excellence, along with the Sedgwick Medal, will be presented at the
Annual Meeting Opening Session on November 8. Congratulations to Sue for her many
accomplishments and for bringing recognition to ICEHS and the field of injury control. The
ICEHS Social Hour, slated for Monday evening (Nov. 8), will provide an opportunity for all
of us to honor Susan Baker and her work. Hope to see you in Chicago!

APHA Chair Persons-Elect Meeting
APHA held the 1999 Chairpersons-Elect Meeting on June 24-25 at the Renaissance Hotel
across the street from the new APHA headquarters in Washington, DC. The purpose of the
meeting was to introduce the incoming Chairs to the APHA staff and to provide an
orientation to the processes and functions of APHA offices and leaders. We received a tour
of the new headquarters building. Its a beautiful place right in the heart of DC. APHA
welcomes members to stop by when you're in town to check it out. With many new staff
members, APHA is trying hard to develop new processes, and streamline old ones, to
increase section and member involvement. Meanwhile, many of the chair-elects made it very
clear to Dr. Akhter and his staff that they and their members wish to be more involved in
the activities the staff and Executive Board take on our behalf. All in all, a feisty and
action packed two days!
Lisa Cohen Barrios, DrPH
ICEHS Chair-Elect

APHA/ICEHS Elections
This is just to let members know that there was a transcription error at the APHA
office in the biosketch for David Lawrence. David provided us with additional information
about himself as a candidate for Chairperson, upon request. Below is attached a note from
him, with a profile of himself.
"I've worked in the field of emergency care and injury prevention since the
mid-1970s as a paramedic, an ER nurse, an epidemiologist, and as director of the Injury
Section of the Louisiana State Office of Public Health. Currently, I'm director of the
Center for Childhood Injury Prevention at San Diego State University working with county
and state health departments to help them develop their injury programs. I've been
privileged to serve in elected and volunteer positions with STIPDA and as an invited
member of advisory groups to the NCIPC and NHTSA. I'll do my best for the ICEHS
Section."--David Lawrence

CDC/NCIPC News: Mark Rosenberg accepts new
position
Dr. Mark L. Rosenberg, Director, National Center for Injury Prevention and Control
(NCIPC), CDC, has announced that he has accepted the position of Science Director at the
Collaborative Center for Child Well-being (CCCW) at the Task Force for Child Survival and
Development in Atlanta, effective September 1, 1999. This is a unique opportunity for Dr.
Rosenberg to work in an extremely important public health arena with a remarkable public
health leader, Dr. William H. Foege, current Director of CCCW and former Director of CDC.
For the past 16 years, Dr. Rosenberg has been the driving force behind CDC's violence
prevention program, and as Director of NCIPC since 1993, he has played a truly seminal
role in the development and recognition of the Center and the field of injury prevention
and control. Under Dr. Rosenberg's leadership, NCIPC's budget has grown from $32 million
in fiscal year 1993 to $64 million in fiscal year 1999 and the injury control science base
has been strengthened to a remarkable degree. A strong research network has been built in
the field of injury prevention through the establishment of 10 Injury Control Research
Centers and the peer-reviewed research grant program, and effective partnerships have been
established with every State in the country, a host of other Federal agencies engaged in
different aspects of injury control, many business and voluntary organizations, and the
World Health Organization. CDC has awarded 187 peer-reviewed, research awards since 1987,
an investment in science of $148 million that has so far produced more than 1,200
peer-reviewed, published scientific papers. We have invested in biomechanics research;
developed innovative approaches to violence prevention, such as the prevention of violence
against women, youth and school violence, and suicide; established a productive
partnership with the Department of Justice; and brought definition and clarity to
traumatic brain injury. We have strengthened our capacity to monitor injuries in America
through projects in State health departments that monitor traumatic brain injury, violence
against women, and other injury problems and through collaborative efforts with our
partners in the Departments of Justice and Transportation and the Consumer Product Safety
Commission. I know that all of you will join me in wishing Dr. Rosenberg the very best in
his new venture and giving him a collective "thank you" and congratulations for
all that he has done. I have initiated a process to identify an exceptional individual to
serve as Acting Director of NCIPC while we undertake a formal recruitment process. A
formal search committee for Dr. Rosenberg's successor will be established by early
September.
