ICEHS Annual Awards Dinner
This year the ICEHS Annual Awards Dinner will be held on Wednesday night, November 10,
at the Columbia Yacht Club in Chicago, immediately following the Business Meeting. The
Club, founded in 1892 and housed in an elegant 390 foot ship docked on Chicago's lake
front, provides a unique view of the nighttime Chicago skyline. You can see and read all
about it at www.torresen.com/columbia. The dinner will be buffet
style in the Club's private dining room. A fish and a totally vegetarian entree, together
with a wide variety of salads, vegetable dishes, and desserts will be served. For those of
us who are still eating such things, there will be a carved to order roast beef (after
all, this is Chicago!).
Although the Club is only a 10 minute walk from the Section's base at the Sheraton
Hotel, charter bus transportation will be provided as part of the ticket cost. While it
would be a lovely 10 minute stroll on the pedestrian/bike path along the Chicago River and
Chicago's Lakefront, the committee thought it best not to gamble on Chicago's weather in
November. Buses will leave the Sheraton 15 and 45 minutes after the close of the Business
Meeting. Buses will return to the Sheraton, leaving in three trips at our convenience up
until 11PM if needed. Maps will be provided to the hearty upon request.
The cost of the dinner and transportation will be $38 for full members and $25 for
students. As usual, our awardees will be our guests. Janet Holden, formerly of the
University of Illinois at Chicago, is now the Executive Director of the Association for
the Advancement of Automotive Medicine. The AAAM has thus graciously agreed to serve as
fiscal agent at no charge to the Section. (For information about AAAM, go to www.carcrash.org)
Please make your check out to AAAM and mail it to:
Janet Holden
AAAM
2340 Des Plaines Avenue, Suite 106
DesPlaines, IL 60018.
Please note "APHA" in the bottom left corner of your check (and update
Janet's address in your address book).
Reservations are needed IMMEDIATELY and can be made by mail along with your check, or
by e-mailing Janet at jahaaam@aol.com. Payment can be
made at the Annual Meeting. A very limited number of reservations will be taken at the
Section Exhibit Booth and must be made by Monday, November 8. The absolute maximum number
of attendees is 95 and so please get your reservation in.
For any further information about the dinner, please e-mail Janet or call her at
847-390-8927, ext.12. See you there!

NEWS FROM THE MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE
The Membership Committee worked with APHA to send out almost 300 letters to potential
new members. With the help of several section members who provided mailing lists, we were
able to put together a list focusing on professionals currently working in the area of
injury control who were not currently members. We think there is enormous potential for
growth in the section, and this recruitment drive will hopefully bring in some highly
motivated new members. The best way to recruit new members is through word of mouth - so
be sure to let your colleagues know about the section. New member registration forms can
be downloaded from the APHA Web site or
join through registration to the Annual Meeting.

NEW FATAL WORK INJURY REPORTS
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has just released two Census of Fatal Occupational
Injuries (CFOI) reports: "National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, 1998,"
USDL 99-208, August 4, 1999.
"Fatal Workplace Injuries in 1997: A Collection of Data and Analysis," BLS
Report 934, July 1999.
To compile counts that are as complete as possible, the BLS fatality census uses
diverse reporting systems to identify, verify, and profile fatal work injuries.
Information about each job-related fatality (occupation and other worker characteristics,
industry, type of event, and machinery or equipment involved) is obtained by
cross-referencing various source documents, such as death certificates, workers'
compensation reports, and Federal and State agency administrative records.
USDL 99-208 is the annual CFOI news release and summarizes work injury fatalities that
occurred in 1998. The release reports that fatal work injuries fell to their lowest level
since the CFOI program began in 1992. An 18 percent drop in job-related homicides
accounted for a large portion of the decline. Special tables are provided for the
following types of fatalities:
-- Job-related homicides;
-- Workers struck by vehicles;
-- Construction industry fatalities
BLS Report 934 contains six articles in addition to about 30 tables that profile fatal
injuries by various worker and incident characteristics. The report contains the following
articles:
"National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, 1997" by Census of Fatal
Occupational Injuries staff
"Logging is Perilous Work" by Eric Sygnatur
"Worker Fatalities from being Caught in Machinery" by Janice Windau
"Profile of Work Injuries Incurred by Young Workers" by Janice Windau, Eric
Sygnatur, and Guy Toscano
"Job Hazards in the Waste Industry" By Dino Drudi
"Fatalities to Law Enforcement Officers and Firefighters, 1992-97" by Cynthia
Clarke and Mark Zak
Both reports are available free of charge by e-mailing your address to CFOIstaff@bls.gov or calling the CFOI staff at (202)
606-6175. The news release and much of the information in the 1997 report is available on
the BLS Internet site http://www.bls.gov/oshhome.htm. Information on nonfatal
occupational injuries and illnesses is also available on that site.
