ANNUAL MEETING: CALL FOR ABSTRACTS FOR 2000 ANNUAL MEETING
The February 1, 2000, deadline for submission of
abstracts for the Annual Meeting is approaching fast. This year's process is very
different from the past so please read the following information carefully before
preparing your abstracts.
No More Paper
That's right, this year's submission is entirely on-line. You can
access the submission page at <http://apha.confex.com/index.htm>
or follow links from the APHA home page. An "intelligent form" will take you
through the submission process. As you move from step to step it will show you your
previous entries so that you can check these for typos, etc. You may edit your abstract at
any time prior to the submission deadline. This means you may leave the site at any stage
of the submission and come back to your abstract(s) over several days. There is extensive
online help for each part of the process.
Write Down Your ID And Password
When you enter the ICEHS abstract submission site, you will be given
a password that allows you to access your abstracts, and an abstract ID number. Please
write these numbers down before you do anything else. Everything you enter is saved
automatically but these numbers are the only way to get back to modify your work if the
connection is broken.
Enter Keywords And Learning Objectives
Learning objectives are required to obtain continuing education
credit for sessions. At the 1999 conference we noticed that non-CE sessions were very
poorly attended. Please help us ensure that this does not happen to ICEHS sessions in
2000. Keywords are very helpful in the review process. Both are required by APHA.
Include A Two-Page Summary
Please take time to include a summary of your paper. Summaries
strengthen the review process and work to your advantage. After completing the abstract
text, you will be reminded that a two-page summary is required and given the opportunity
to enter summary text.
Expect A Confirmation
When you submit your abstract you will receive confirmation of the
submission by e-mail. Please check the details to be sure all is correct. If you do not
receive a confirmation, query this with the technical support staff - there is a direct
link to them on the site.
Please Don't Wait Until February 1
APHA is concerned that if everyone tries to submit abstracts on the
last day, the process will slow down or be overloaded. After midnight on the submission
deadline, you will not be able to modify or submit abstracts. Please help us avoid
problems by submitting early. We look forward to reading your abstracts.

ANNUAL MEETING:
WANTED - ABSTRACT REVIEWERS FOR 2000 ANNUAL MEETING
Reviewers are a critical component of the program planning process.
The quality of the sessions is greatly influenced by their decisions. We encourage you to
be part of this process - it's not much work and very interesting (really!). Each year
reviewers are asked to review abstracts (no more than 12) in their area of interest and
expertise. This year's reviewers will access assigned papers and submit their reviews and
comments on-line. Because each abstract is reviewed by three reviewers, we need many
reviewers who represent a wide range of interests.
If you would be willing to join our team of reviewers this year, I'd
like to hear from you. Please e-mail me at <cfowler@co.ba.md.us>.
Include your contact information, a list of your areas of interest, expertise or subjects
you would like to review, and your work affiliation. We are careful to avoid conflict of
interest when assigning papers to reviewers and usually avoid reviewers in the same
institution or geographic area. If you are involved in multi-center studies, please let us
know so that we can plan accordingly. Thank you.

The purpose of the Injury Control and Emergency Health Services
Student Paper Competition Award is to foster and reward quality research efforts among
students involved in the field. The Student Paper Competition award was implemented at the
1992 Annual Meeting of the American Public Health Association. This award will be
presented for the ninth time in 2000. We encourage you to spread the word about the
Student Paper Competition award in preparation for the American Public Health Association
Annual Meeting in Boston in 2000.
Requirements for Submitting Applications and Criteria for the Award:
Applicants must submit an abstract according to guidelines given above (see "Call for
Abstracts for 2000 Annual Meeting"). Along with their abstract, applicants must check
the "Consider This Paper For An Award" button on the on-line abstract submission
form, and indicate the school and program in which they are enrolled, the degree pursued,
and their expected date of completion. Applicants who have completed their programs within
the last year, and have not previously presented the same data at a professional meeting
or published the data, are welcome to participate. Following notice of acceptance of the
abstract for either oral or poster presentation by the Scientific Program Chair,
applicants must send a completed manuscript, organized and presented according to standard
journal format (e.g., American Journal of Public Health or other pertinent peer-reviewed
journal), and four blinded copies, to be received by September 1, 2000. With the
submission of the final paper, a statement signed by the advisor should identify any
co-authors involved and the proportion of effort contributed by the student; the student
must be identified as the primary author. The reviews for this competition will be
conducted by at least three external reviewers. It is anticipated that one or more awards
will be presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Public Health Association.
Students must be primary or secondary members of the ICEHS Section of APHA to participate
in this competition. Membership must be confirmed prior to the American Public Health
Association Annual Meeting.

GENERAL NEWS: A MEMORIAL TO COLONEL JOHN STAPP
The death of Colonel Stapp leaves a big hole in our universe. The
gap will always be there, but to encourage the next generation of leaders, the Johns
Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy has established the John Paul Stapp Endowed
Scholarship. Interest from the endowment will go to students whose research and study
focus on aviation safety, highway safety, or biomechanics - areas that have benefited
greatly from Colonel Stapp's historic research.
Contributions of any size will be welcomed. Gifts of $500 to $2,500
will be matched by faculty members at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. A gift or
pledge of $50,000 to $100,000 to the Stapp Scholarship will be matched by the chairman of
the Johns Hopkins University Board of Trustees.
For more information about the endowment, call Sue Baker
(410-955-2078) or email <sbaker@jhsph.edu>.
Contributions or pledges to the Johns Hopkins University, earmarked for the Stapp
Fellowship, can be sent to the JHU School of Public Health, 614 N. Wolfe St., Baltimore
MD, 21205.
